This beautiful late 1930s painting titled, 'Torch Fisherman' was painted by listed Hawaiian artist, Louis G. Pohl (1915 - 1999). Pohl was a painter, printmaker, art teacher and author. At one time he was director of the Linekona Art Center, an art education facility that Pohl helped establish. During his lifetime Pohl was recognized by The Hawaii State Legislature and the Honolulu Printmakers as a living treasure for his lifetime achievements. Through his career, Pohl helped establish exhibits, galleries, the Linekona Art Center and the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts. This rare vintage watercolor is a beautiful representation of life in Hawaii in the 1930s and is still in amazingly fine condition, colors remain bright. ULTRA RARE Original 1940s art by listed Hawaii Artist TIP FREEMAN of HONOLULU Original airbrush art on board. Depicts the scene of the famous war that took place at the Pali in Honolulu. Kamehameha’s army marched to Nuuanu Valley to face Kalanikupule’s troops. The ensuing battle was fierce, bloody and unrelenting. Gradually, Kamehameha’s men gained an advantage, forcing Kalanikupule’s forces to retreat further up the valley. The Oahuans attempted to make a final stand, but Kamehameha’s army was too strong. Thousands of Kalanikupule’s men were pursued and driven over the steep cliffs to their deaths. It’s said that the victory was so complete that not a single Oahu warrior that got into the upper part of the valley escaped alive. 14 1/4" x 10 1/2" bright colors, some light edge wear.
